• Look for stampings. By American standards, fake gold is anything less than 10k.

Contemplating selling your gold jewelry? Are you wondering if any of it is even real? (Almost all of our customers come with pieces they just aren’t sure about.) Here are a few things you can do at home to check if you jewelry is real or fake: (By “fake” I of course mean Costume Jewelry!)

1.  Magnet test – Does your chain/ring/bracelet stick to a magnet? If so – it isn’t real gold.

2.  Check the stamping/markings – Look at the inside of your ring, clasp of your bracelet/necklace…Does it say “14k” or “10k” If so – chances are you are looking at a real piece of gold.

3.  Plated markings – Here are some classic stampings which can be stamped on your jewelry to indicate they are gold-plated (not real gold, they just have a thin layer of gold on top of a non-gold metal.)  “14K HGE”  or “14K HG” or “14K GP” or “14K GF” The Karat can range (for example 10k, 18k, etc.)
