Gold Parties in the Spring

March 31, 2010 by: January Thomas

Gold Parties are a fun way to get rid of your old, unwanted and broken gold and jewelry pieces. It is easy as 1-2-3 to organize a gold party with My Gold Party, LLC.

1st — Contact a My Gold Party Representative in your area by clicking here or you can contact My Gold Party Corporate Offices at info@mygoldparty.com or 1-888-44-MYGOLD for assistance in setting up a party.

2nd — Invite acquaintances to your home for a gold party and use your My Gold Party Representative to assist you in preparing invitations. Tell your invitees to search their homes for old, broken or unused gold bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc. Home parties, where you have the option to sell your gold, is a great opportunity to renew friendships and tell stories of how certain jewelry pieces were obtained and in some instances, forgotten. Remember that the host of the gold party will also receive 10% of all gold and jewelry items purchased during the gold party.

3rd — At the gold party, a My Gold Party Representative will test each person’s gold for karat content, weight in grams and then offer a payout to you based on the spot price of gold the day of the gold party. After the offer is made and if you want to sell your gold, the representative will issue a check to you for payment of your gold.

Gold is the New Tupperware!

December 21, 2009 by: January Thomas

ROWAYTON, Conn. — The 1950s were big for Tupperware parties. The 1970s were hot for Mary Kay cosmetics. As this decade hobbles to a close, a new kind of social gathering is invading America’s living rooms: the gold party.

Shannan DeCesare, 40 years old, brought four gold chains, two unloved bracelets, some earrings that had lost their mates and a couple of other old pieces to her neighbor’s house here last week. Minutes later, she was showing off a check for $610. “Merry Christmas to me!” she exclaimed amid applause from the small group of women clustered around host Christine Smith’s dining-room table. “Don’t tell my husband,” she joked, as she pondered how she might spend the loot.

Gold is above $1,110 an ounce

Worries about inflation have pushed gold prices above $1,110 an ounce, up 50% from a year ago. And many people stung by the weak economy are looking for discreet ways to raise extra cash without sneaking down to the pawnshop.

As a result, gold parties are booming, creating opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs-and a new worry for regulators. Typically, small companies promote the parties through word of mouth or by advertising in communities likely to produce plenty of sellers. The companies provide a specialist to value sellers’ items, and pay the host a cut of about 10% of proceeds.

One golden rule: “What happens at a gold party stays at a gold party,” jokes Margaret Petrucelli, 43, who founded her firm, It’s a Gold Mine Party LLC, a year ago after she was laid off from the mortgage division of investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc. She now has a network of about 30 specialists holding 30 to 40 parties a week on her behalf across the country.

“It can be really difficult for a lot of people to walk into a jewelry store or pawnshop holding a little bag of gold,” said Lisa Rosenthal, 46, whose two-year-old Massachusetts company, Party of Gold, has grown to 130 specialists working more than 1,000 parties a month, primarily in the Northeast.

The gold rush of 2009 is happening in an unlikely place: at private parties in living rooms across the country. WSJ’s Kelly Evans reports on the cottage industry that’s sprung up around the surging price of gold.

Regulators and industry veterans worry that some parties might be capitalizing on consumers’ lack of knowledge about the industry and the fair price of gold.

“There are all kinds of house parties out there selling things from plastic goods to candles, but none is really as open to fraud as this particular type,” said Claudette Carveth, a spokeswoman for Connecticut’s department of consumer protection. “Your guard is down because you’re at a friend’s house, assuming the person taking your jewelry has been checked out.”

Ms. Carveth added that gold buyers in her state are required to file for a precious metals license in each municipality where they work and use a state-certified scale to weigh it.

But, “There are no industry standards,” said January Thomas, who started her Birmingham, Mich., company, My Gold Party, two years ago and now has 80 specialists working for her across the U.S. “There’s nothing that says you have to pay a certain minimum value to the seller.”

Most gold-party companies pay sellers between 65% and 75% of what their gold would be worth to a refiner. The quality of workmanship and sentimental value have nothing to do with it.

Ms. Thomas said one positive effect of the gold-party craze is that competition has helped standardize pricing-a boon for sellers. “The days when pawn shops could buy gold for $5 a gram and sell it for $12 or $14 are gone, because there’s so much more awareness out there,” said Leo Anglo, owner of Vincent’s Jewelers in Creve Coeur, Mo., and past president of the Missouri Jewelers Association.

Mr. Anglo said all the focus on gold prices may not be in sellers’ best interest. “Gold buyers typically don’t pay anything for gemstones and might even charge to take them out,” he said, recommending sellers take their pieces to a jeweler who can pay for the stones or even sell the piece intact for a higher sum.

Yet jewelers have a tough time matching the convenience-and excitement-of a gold party.

One took place on a recent weeknight at Ms. Smith’s home in Rowayton, a coastal suburb of Norwalk about 45 miles northeast of New York City.

From left to right: Betsy Marvaez, Mayte Acosta, Gloria Rodriguez, Madelin Santana and Ada Romeu wait as Pedro Linares calculates how much FastCashGoldParties.com will pay for the gold jewelry that Ms. Acosta brought to the party on Oct. 30 in Hialeah, Florida.

Peggy Peterson, a 36-year-old stay-at-home mom, brought a plastic freezer bag holding at least a dozen pieces that once belonged to her mother, who died four years ago, and a gold link bracelet she bought herself on a trip to Florence while in college.

Ms. Peterson said she had planned to take the lot to a jewelry store to be appraised but never got around to it, and was wary of mail-in services such as the heavily advertised Cash4Gold. “When I heard about the gold party from a neighbor, I thought it seemed like a safer bet because it’s through somebody I know,” said Ms. Peterson.

Jeff Aronson, chief executive of Cash4Gold in Pompano Beach, Fla., said in a statement his customers “are looking for an easy, fast, secure and discreet transaction from home, and may not want others to know that they are selling their jewelry for cash.” The two-year-old company has recorded about 900,000 transactions of people mailing in their gold, and 94% of people accept the money offered.

Under the glow of a reading lamp, specialist Sarina Galu ran a high-powered magnet over each set of pieces-the first step used to weed out fake gold and determine each lot’s value.

Some of the pieces Ms. Peterson brought, such as a heavy pendant necklace, turned out to be inexpensive costume jewelry. But many of the rings, bracelets and earrings were 10-karat or 14-karat gold-and Ms. Peterson walked away with a check for $536.

“My mother would be happy to see me get the money for it,” she said.

Sell Gold For the Holidays!

December 14, 2009 by: January Thomas

With less than two weeks until Christmas, everyone is busy decorating, shopping and wrapping presents. I am almost done with my shopping, however I am trying to figure out what dessert dish to bring on Christmas Eve. (Any good suggestions?)

The last few weeks I have met up one-on-one with quite a few people so they may sell gold to me. It still amazes me after a few years of doing this that I see the same kind of pieces over and over. Rope chains, nugget bracelets and rings, tons of gold charms, old rings, missing gold hoop earrings. These items haven’t been worn in over a decade (or more!) and people are cashing in at a great time. Out with the old and in with the new!

To meet up with a rep in your area (or host a party), click here to view what reps are in your state. If you would like to send your gold in direct to us, please click here.

Any questions on how to sell gold? Please do not hesitate to call 888-44-MYGOLD or email us: Info@mygoldparty.com

Looking forward to seeing your old gold rope chains!

My Gold Party, LLC (“My Gold Party”) is now doing business in Canada

December 8, 2009 by: January Thomas

My Gold Party is pleased to announce that it is now doing business in Canada. As of November 2009, individuals can now send their unwanted gold items to My Gold Party in exchange for a quick payment (USD). Once the package is received, My Gold Party tests and weighs each piece. Once the entire package has been evaluated, a quote is then sent via email to the customer. At this point, the customer can choose to accept the quote or have the items returned to them at no additional cost.

Here is what Julie H. from Tennessee had to say about her experience with My Gold Party:  “I was hesitant to just send my gold pieces in the mail, concerned that I would not receive a fair value if I was not there to ‘make my case.’ I could not have been more wrong! The entire process was fair, professional, with excellent communication and punctuated by the receipt of a generous payment! Thank you for your professionalism and your responsiveness. As a result, my friends will be sending in their box of goodies! Thanks!”

My Gold Party plans to expand its home party business to Canada in 2010 as well. My Gold Party is a safe and convenient way to get rid of old and cluttered gold. At the gold party, a My Gold Party representative will test and weigh the partygoers gold, and pay them on the spot for their unwanted items.  What a perfect night out for your friends and family!

My Gold Party, LLC was founded by January Thomas in the beginning of 2008. What started as one person throwing gold parties has now turned into over 80 representatives throughout the United States and continues to grow. Happy Thanksgiving!

November 25, 2009 by: January Thomas

Hi everyone!

The holidays are fast approaching and I, for one, could use all the money I could get to help make the burden a little lighter. Sell gold with My Gold Party to help you make ends meet.

It is also the time for fundraisers and donations. This is a good opportunity to use My Gold Party as a way to get donations for your charity or organization that you are or want to help out this holiday season. You can host a party where the guests can bring in their unwanted gold and donate a portion of their proceeds to the organization(s) that you are trying to help.

This can be done in a number of ways. The person selling their gold can donated a portion of their proceeds, a set percentage of their proceeds, or even the entire proceeds from one piece of jewelry. The great part about this is that everyone walks away feeling good. You, as the host, feel good about helping out those in need and so do your guests.

One of the awesome parts about this is that the people walk away with money. They don’t even have to pay anything out of their pocket, the donate, and make money. It’s a pretty cool idea. If you are interested in hosting a party or finding a rep in your area feel free to contact us at info@mygoldparty.com. Any other information you might need you can find on our website.

In light of Thanksgiving we’d like to thank all of our reps and hosts. We are grateful for you. We hope that everyone has a safe, healthful, and happy thanksgiving!

Even The Encyclopedia Defines a “Gold Party” !!

November 13, 2009 by: January Thomas

Gold party

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gold parties are parties similar to Tupperware parties where women gather to sell their gold jewelry to gold buyers. They are becoming increasingly popular as people look for ways to raise money during the current recession. The buyer, generally, weighs and tests jewelry and other items for party guests. The testing includes a variety of means, including acid tests, magnet tests, and other methods to determine gold content. If a guest decides to sell the items, the buyer, then, pays her at the party. The phenomenon began in Michigan in 2007 and has since spread. There are several individuals and companies in the industry, including Golden Girls LLC, headquartered in Fort Myers, Florida, and My Gold Party LLC.

Charitable Giving and Fundraising

Some organizations, such as My Gold Party LLC, emphasize charitable giving and fundraising. Golden Girls® donates approximately $45,000 to charity every month, in addition to fundraising in partnership with hostesses and charitable organizations. With this unique type of fundraiser program there is no selling on the part of the host. The guests receive payment for their gold jewelry which they no longer wear, then a portion of those payouts are donated to the group. Gold parties often offer much lower returns for the participant’s gold than other selling outlets, such as jewelers or eBay.

I found this definition online today — It’s pretty funny that about 2 years ago when I started no one even knew what a “gold party” was — and now Wikipedia has a full blown definition of it!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Gold could mean green for Y

July 9, 2009 by: January Thomas

The Towpath Trail YMCA will give area residents the chance to earn a little more green by exchanging old gold jewelry and trinkets for cash when it hosts a My Gold Party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 30.

“I got the idea from CNN,” said Trevor Sprague, the membership and marketing director for the YMCA of Western Stark County. “CNN did a report about My Gold Parties that people can host in their homes, but the story also said that money could be donated to non-profit organizations. … I thought it would be a great thing for the YMCA. It’s a win-win.”

Anyone wishing to bring in gold items to exchange will have to make an appointment by calling the Towpath YMCA at 330-879-0800.
“The sessions should only take about 20 minutes – give or take, based on how much they bring in,” Sprague said. “They told me that the average person walks out with about $300. But even if it’s less than that, it should be a good thing. Anything would be enough to help some us get by until the end of the month.”

Sprague said he hasn’t worked with the My Gold Party group before but did some research before contacting them. In addition to CNN, ABC, MSNBC, USA Today, Time and Washington Post have done stories on the organization.

“From what I saw on CNN and read about otherwise I knew that they were a reputable organization,” Sprague said.

For every person who comes in, My Gold Party will make a donation to the Western Stark County YMCA’s scholarship fund account. The scholarship fund – for which the YMCA will be collecting donations throughout May – benefits Massillon-area families who may not otherwise be able to afford YMCA membership.

This year, the YMCA expected to support local families with $70,000 in financial aid, but the need was much greater than the organization’s officials expected.

“We have already seen a significant increase in the request for these funds already,” Sprague said, adding that the YMCA is on pace to provide $95,000 in support to local families.

Access to the YMCA gives residents access to health and fitness activities that support healthy lifestyles, groups and clubs that encourage community unity and needed resources such as child care.

“The annual campaign isn’t just about raising money,” Sprague said, “it’s also about awareness. A lot of people don’t realize that the YMCA really does have something for everyone. … The YMCA is not about race, creed, religion or ethnicity. It’s a place for the spirit, mind and body. It’s a place for everybody.”

Participating in the My Gold Party isn’t the only way to help out the YMCA. The Massillon Arby’s, 1111 Lincoln Way E.; Giant Eagle Get Go, 2046 Lincoln Way E.; and Navarre Georgio’s Oven Fresh Pizza Company, 1 Main St. N., are selling $1 placards. The entire donation will go to the YMCA’s scholarship fund. The placards will be displayed at the various locations.

Placards can also be purchased at either the Massillon Family or the Towpath Trail YMCA branches. General donations to the scholarship fund can be made at either location as well.

“Every dollar raised through the campaign stays in this community,” Sprague said, “and helps people who live right here in the community.”
