Out With the Old-In With the New

December 13, 2010 by: January Thomas

There is something to be said for a gorgeous piece of jewelry given to you by a loved one. But then there are those pieces that you just never liked, or got from a boyfriend whose name you can no longer remember! Those are the pieces that are surely tucked away in some drawer collecting dust.

With the New Year just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to be out with the old…and make more room for the new! The best way to make extra money to purchase new jewelry is by selling the gold you no longer want. Have a party with friends, chat and have a glass of wine, and at the end of the night you’ve made money off of old “what’s-his-name’s” gold locket from high school.

I can’t remember how many times I received nice pieces of jewelry from family and friends for the holidays, many of them real gold. And now I wouldn’t wear it if you paid me. So why not get paid to not wear it?

If you’re already planning a holiday girl’s night, make it a My Gold Party and all your friends can leave with spending money, ready to shop for the newest hottest piece of jewelry.

In the Global Economy: Home is the New Office

November 30, 2010 by: January Thomas

I came across this interesting article today. It’s out of India, but the scope of the story is global, and the headline is “The office is history; it’s now the age of work-from-home.”

That’s not necessarily news to me – since I’ve working at home for a few years now – but the fact that it’s becoming more common is encouraging. After all, entrepreneurship is the key to real growth and forward motion in societies. Think about it, most great inventions – Ford’s Model T, the telephone, Facebook, Apple computers – come from independent thinkers.

But don’t you ever wonder: Did Steve Jobs create the first Macintosh in his pajamas? Did Henry Ford burn the midnight oil (pun intended)? Did Alexander Graham Bell sit at his kitchen table, or in a separate lab, to tinker with that first phone?

We may have to wonder about those questions, but we can discuss our own work habits:

Those of you who work from home, do you wake up at the crack of dawn, take a lunch break at noon, and quit around 5 p.m., as if you were at an office? Or do you make your own hours, depending on the day?

Do you work at a co-work space, library or coffee shop to avoid distractions, or do you work right in your living room?

Do you wear a suit, dress business casual, or just throw on some jeans for the work-day? Weigh in on the comments, but here’s my two cents:

Where I work:

I have set up a full office in my house so I have everything I need at my fingertips. (specifically in the basement so I could spread out). Having it in the basement also lets me “leave work” at the end of the day, close the door and not see my work.

When I work/what hours I work:

I have pretty “normal” work hours. 9-5 – sometimes earlier, sometimes later…Just depends on what is going on that day.

How I take care of a toddler and work:

I do have a babysitter for my 17 month old. (I couldn’t accomplish what I needed to on a daily basis and watch him.) But, there are some days where I do juggle both. IN those instances, I wake up and do the absolute necessary items that need to be done before my Husband goes to work. (this way he can start breakfast for Charlie) Sometimes I can do a few things with him in the basement with me…but for the most part, his 2-3 hour afternoon naps allows me to get additional work done then.

Gold Parties

November 16, 2010 by: January Thomas

Does everybody know exactly what a home gold party is? Now, I know I blog about this a lot, but that’s because it’s my business, and if someone is on my website, I want to make sure they know exactly what My Gold Party is, and what we do.

So, a home gold party (one thrown by a My Gold Party rep, at least) is a party at which friends, family and coworkers can get together, have a glass of wine, gossip, play games, or whatever! – all the while selling their old, unwanted gold jewelry and coins for instant cash.
How it works:

How it works:
- A My Gold Party rep finds someone who wants to host a gold party.
- The host then invites anyone she wants – sisters, colleagues, acquaintances, whoever! And she tells her guests to bring any gold jewelry they want to sell.
- As the party is in full swing, the My Gold Party rep tests and weighs each gold item, and calculates the price to be paid out to each guest.
- Party guests leave with cash.
- The party host gets a percentage of the entire night’s sales total.
- The rep gets a pay out percentage as well.
- Win. Win. Win.

And that’s a My Gold Party home gold party!

We’re In the Money: Gold Diggers of 1933

November 10, 2010 by: January Thomas

Here’s a random gold-related tidbit for today: One of the most amazing, gorgeous, jaw-dropping scenes in the history of cinema is the intricate Busby Berkeley-choreographed dance number set to “We’re In the Money” in the film Gold Diggers of 1933.

Ginger Rodgers. Dresses made of gold coins. Pig Latin!

There’s nothing I can say to describe this scene that will be any better than just watching it. So here it is…

Throw a Golden Fundraiser!

November 3, 2010 by: January Thomas

The most important part of a successful fundraiser is getting people to notice it in the first place.

After seeing a million bake sales and can drives, people start to tune out. But have you ever heard of a fundraiser where people actually leave with more money than they came with – while still donating to the cause?

By throwing a fundraiser with My Gold Party, you can do just that.

Everyone has a few broken or unwanted pieces of jewelry in their home that they are willing to part with – especially for a good cause. And by throwing a My Gold Party fundraiser, people can sell their gold, give a percentage (or all) of the money to charity and keep the rest for themselves.

If this sounds too good to be true, it’s not! Call or e-mail me (January Thomas, CEO of My Gold Party) to set up a fundraiser in your area. Just click on our “Contact Us” link or click here: CONTACT.

Juggling Work and a Toddler: How do YOU do it?

November 1, 2010 by: January Thomas

Part of the reason I started My Gold Party was that I was starting a family and I wanted the flexibility to make my own hours. And that has worked out wonderfully. Instead of rushing to 8 a.m. meetings at an office across town, I can work from home. Phone calls and meetings now intertwine with feedings and naps. But now that little Charlie is walking, things just got a whole lot more complicated. We all adapt our own ways of dealing with what life throws us, but there’s no such thing as too much advice. So I wanted to ask YOU – other working moms – how you juggle work and kids. Connect with My Gold Part on Facebook and let’s share our tips on balancing work life and home life. A little support goes a long way! Tags: sell gold, home business, gold parties, sell my gold, buy gold, starting a business, sell your gold, gold price

Building a Business: Find Your Niche

October 29, 2010 by: January Thomas

Starting your own business is hard work. From marketing to payroll to replacing the printer toner, everything is on your shoulders. But if you choose your business carefully, you can find your perfect niche in the market – and thrive.

The first step is deciding what business to go into. For some, the business just evolves out of a hobby, like say, making strawberry jam or taking family portraits for friends. In those kinds of cases, you already know WHAT you want to do, you just have to decide HOW to do it.

But for others, the decision to start a business comes from the desire to work for ourselves, be in charge of our own destiny, and challenge ourselves. In this case, the exact nature of the business is yet to be decided. So, how do you decide?

You have to find a niche – and by that I mean finding something that’s unique, so that you don’t have as many competitors, but also something that you have at least a little insider knowledge about.

I married into a family that already owned a jewelry business, so when I found some old gold jewelry I wanted to get rid of, my husband’s family helped me sell it for the best price. And that’s when I realized I could help others do the same.

So, I had the insider knowledge (through the jewelry store), I just needed to find a niche. There are tons of infomercials out there asking you to send your jewelry off without knowing anything about the company buying it. So, I thought, why not make the process friendlier? Why not throw parties where people could have fun with friends and make some money at the same time?

And that’s when My Gold Party was born.

To find your niche, explore all your various connections. Friends, relatives, coworkers, neighbors – you never know where your “insider knowledge” will come from.
