Golden Boy Brings in The Bling

March 2, 2011 by: January Thomas

Best Actor Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) joked that his career is over now that he has the ultimate feather in his cap. If this is truly the case, Colin could rake in some serious cash by selling his coveted Oscar. The Academy Award statuette weighs 8.5 lbs., which is worth roughly $176,467.84 if it were 24k gold.

Or, the golden boy could become one a Hollywood Rep for My Gold Party and have the ladies flocking to his crib to cash in their old gold and he’d save himself from being a commoner forever. Visit mygoldparty.com to find out how you can become a rep or a host.

Gold Stats

Name: Gold

Chemical Symbol: Au

Atomic Number: 79

Atomic weight: 196.967

Today’s Price: 1350

Since 4000 BC, gold has been used to adorn decorative objects as far off as Eastern Europe. The first traces were likely mined in the Transylvanian Alps and In 300 BC, gold jewelry was buried in the First Egyptian Dynasty with royalty. This precious metal has been highly sought-after for centuries – used as coinage, jewelry, and other arts throughout time.

Compared with other metals gold is the least chemically reactive and resists many individual acids. Gold is insoluble in nitric acid, which does dissolve silver and base metals. This “Acid Test” is one way to test your gold. But you could put away the goggles and gloves and host a gold party instead! We have trained representatives who will test the gold for you. Or better yet, become a rep yourself and you will receive gold standard training.

If you like it then you should have put a ring on it….

February 1, 2011 by: January Thomas

But what if he did put a ring on it and now your taste has changed? Or maybe, your taste in men has changed too! Many women are struggling with the changing gold trends and their wedding ring isn’t what they fell in love with in the 80s. While the sentimental value may be great, there’s nothing wrong with your ring evolving just like your marriage has. So go ahead and scout out new styles. You may find something else you like…or you may decide to update the ring you have. If you have to wear anything every single day-you should LOVE it! And by all means-if you’ve ditched the man, ditch the ring. I know a girl who sold her wedding ring and bought a convertible!

How old is your gold?

January 20, 2011 by: January Thomas

Have you ever gotten ready for a night out and thought, “my jewelry is ancient!”  Well, it can’t get much older than this:

4,000 year old gold necklace

4,000 year old gold necklace

Unearthed near Lake Titicaca from a burial pit at Jiskairumoko, this piece of jewelry is 4000 years old, dating back to 2100 BC. It is the oldest man-made gold object ever found in the Americas. For more of the story click here.

There’s no telling what the hunter-gatherer would take home from a My Gold Party for this ancient artifact but I bet it’s safe to say the tag would read “Priceless”.

Gold as currency, gold as cash

July 28, 2010 by: January Thomas

The appeal of gold is obvious. Its bright yellow color and shiny luster have been considered dazzling since the dawn of civilization. It’s also the most malleable and ductile pure metal known to man and doesn’t oxidize in air or water.

Gold has served as a symbol of wealth throughout history. As such, many countries have tied their currency to a “gold standard,” meaning all its currency is backed by reserves of pure gold bricks.

However, the amount of gold in the world is finite and production has not grown in relation to the world’s economies. Most countries, including the U.S., have gone off the gold standard, because there just isn’t enough of it to back all our currency.

All these factors have created the perfect storm for those wanting to sell their gold. The price of gold has nearly doubled just in the last five years. So, now is the time to get rid of any gold jewelry that you don’t either wear or want to keep for sentimental value.

The good news is that it’s easy and fun to sell your gold and platinum jewelry. My Gold Party has local reps ready to help you throw your own home gold party. You supply the guests and the old gold jewelry, and you’ll all go home a little richer. Just for selling the gold jewelry you’re never going to wear again anyway!

Just go to MyGoldParty.com to learn more about how to host your own gold party or become a My Gold Party rep.

Interesting Gold

January 21, 2010 by: January Thomas

A question I get asked quite often is – “What is the most interesting piece you have ever purchased?” Or “When people sell gold, what is the craziest piece you have ever seen?”

Many of you may have seen the news piece from Good Morning America where I talk about the dentures I purchased from a customer. These dentures were willed down to her – And she was in turn willing them down to her granddaughter. Instead of passing the dentures down, she thought she would turn them into something useful!

Recently, (and this may not have the “wow-factor” the dentures had) but I came across a charm bracelet. Obviously this woman had been collecting charms for quite sometime. This bracelet had about 25-30 charms total! She collected them on her many travels, received them as gifts (for birthdays, anniversarys) Some even pertained to her job – she displayed on the bracelet an adorable little typewriter. The customer wanted to give this bracelet and her other gold jewelry to her daughters. Unfortunately, none of them wanted to wear any of it…They told her to sell the gold and do something she would enjoy with the money.

I wonder what she did end up doing with the money…? I hope it was another great trip somewhere!

Gold at $1200 by 2010?

November 16, 2009 by: January Thomas

The price of the gold futures hit a record $1,123.40 early Thursday — confounding market analysts who thought there was no way gold would remain so expensive when it first cracked the unheard-of $1,000 mark last year.

The remarkable run has implications far beyond savvy investors. In New York’s diamond district, more people started showing up late last year to sell their gold, and the crush hasn’t let up, said Anthony Iannelli, owner of Iannelli Diamonds.

“They’re bringing in jewelry from the ’70s and ’80s they don’t wear anymore,” he said. “They’re following the news and see prices are high. They realize they have a little cache, and want to take it out of the vault.”

Typically, gold is a safe place for investors to park their money, not something they buy to make money. It doesn’t earn any interest, and because it’s always sought-after, its value tends to be fairly stable. For example, when gold first reached $1,000 it was in March 2008, shortly after the collapse of investment bank Bear Stearns. Investors bought it up then because they feared for the stability of the financial system.

This time is different. Investors — think of them as the ’09ers — are buying gold to protect themselves against the falling dollar.

Currencies are weak investments around the world because of record-low interest rates. Foreign banks that hold substantial amounts of U.S. debt, such as China’s, want to diversify their holdings. News earlier this month that India’s central bank bought nearly $7 billion worth of gold from the International Monetary Fund triggered a frenzy of gold buying.

The surge has been remarkable. Gold is up 7 percent just this month, and 26 percent for the year. Some forecasters see it going to $1,200, $1,500 or beyond — unless the buying frenzy comes to a halt.

Some analysts are panning the gold speculation.

“You just don’t see increases like this over the short term” that last, says Steve Condon, director of investor advisory services for Truepoint Capital in Cincinnati. “This isn’t materially different from gambling.”

Nevertheless, people across the country are cashing in. More than 100 people a day now come to sell their gold at Ernest Perry’s antique and estate jewelry store in Charlotte, N.C., up significantly in recent weeks.

But the rising price of gold has put a dramatic dent in jewelry sales, already suffering from the recession. Far fewer customers are looking to buy gold jewelry because of the soaring price, Perry said.

“I think it will just about kill the gold jewelry business” if the price rises and remains above $1,500 an ounce, Perry said. He predicted silver would become the primary metal used in jewelry if gold prices drive customers out of the market.

For the most part, though, demand for gold is coming from investors and speculators, not from people who actually want to use it. Demand for gold for jewelry and for industrial and dental uses was already falling during the second quarter, according to the latest data available from the World Gold Council.

Perry said customers looking to sell their gold should go to dealers with plenty of experience and expect to get, on average, about 70 percent of the current price. And there are other ways to get into gold than selling family heirlooms.

There are gold funds, publicly traded gold mining companies and gold bullion or coins, depending on what makes someone the most comfortable. No way is certain to be the safest or most lucrative.

And of course, there’s no guarantee the bubble won’t burst.

Gold prices could fall when interest rates rise, the dollar strengthens, or when optimism about the economy takes hold again, as happened briefly the first time gold reached $1,000. If that happens, the damage could be long-lasting: Gold reached $850 an ounce in 1980, then took 28 years to return to that level. (Gold’s peak in 1980 is about $2,300 in 2009 dollars.)

Anyone who’s not sure whether this is a good time to buy can take heart from a Goldman Sachs forecast on Wednesday that said gold prices could reach $1,200 by year’s end. But it’s hard to forget what happened with crude oil prices, which shed more than half their value in less than a year after peaking at $147 a barrel in July 2008.

No one knows when a seemingly unstoppable rally will end badly.

Easy Ways to Score Some Cash

November 12, 2009 by: January Thomas

Easy Ways To Score Some Cash

Many work at home careers can benefit from an influx of cash on the side, especially if you’re just getting started. Here are a few wonderful ideas for earning extra cash as a perfect complement to the work at home lifestyle.

Garage Sales or Internet Auctions

Now is the perfect time for selling any items you just never used or no longer have use for. People are spending more money these days at thrift shops and second hand stores than they are at the local retailer. Gather your items together, wash/iron any clothing you wish to sell (especially if you are selling it online and needing pics) Items that are presented in a neat orderly way sell twice as fast! Don’t forget any collectibles or antiques you might have. My parents just this past week made over $600 on EBay selling antiques they have had just sitting around.

Internet auctions do take a downturn for the summer since people tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, or on vacation, away from their computers. Take advantage of the summer season to both sell your items and buy new items you can sell online in fall and winter.

If you opt for a garage sale, one of the best things you can do is invite your neighbors to join you on the same weekend if they can.

Neighborhood garage sales attract a lot of attention (and people too!)

Consignment Shops

As previously noted, people are spending more money at thrift stores and second hand shops these days, so a great place to make a little extra cash is right there. Once again, wash and iron any clothing you plan to take, and don’t get disappointed if one shop can’t take your items. Chances are another shop in town will be glad to take them. You can get ahead of the game by simply making a few phone calls to all the shops in town and finding out what type of clothing they are currently taking. They will also be more than happy to tell you the condition the clothing needs to be in to be considered acceptable. This will cut down on your chances of being turned away.

Cell Phones and Computers

I have had great success with this method of making a little extra money.

There are sites on the net that will pay you for your old broken used cell phones, Ipods and computers. All of us have old cell phones (some of us have five or more!) and many as well have an old computer or laptop lying around. The great thing is, these companies send you the packaging to put your item in, and the postage is PAID, so all you have to do is drop your item in the package, seal it and send it on its way.

Usually within 14 days you have a check in the mail. A good company I have used at least 10 times is www.flipswap.com. They promise to plant a tree for every phone they get. One of my friends makes great money this way. She took a bunch of boxes that once held reams of paper, and put some nice signs on them. She took the boxes to the local daycares and offices in town and asked them to help keep the environment safe by filling the boxes with old cell phones. She convinced them to keep the nice professional looking box out where others would see what it was for. She empties the boxes once a month, and makes about $3000 a month! Just sending in old used cell phones! You can do the same thing. No business is going to turn down saving the planet these days. You could do the same for laptops as well. A good place to check out is www.laptopsintocash.com. These companies dispose of this electronic equipment properly or rebuild it to reuse.

Ink and Toner

This is the same thing as the cell phones/laptops. There are companies out there that recycle the ink and toner cartridges we use by the hundreds. One such company is www.advantagecartridge.com. They pay GOOD money for used ink cartridges and toner. The same thing can be done as the article above suggests. You can go around and leave boxes to be filled with used ink and toner cartridges. Once a month you can go around and empty all the boxes, then simply send in what you have accumulated, and wait for your check to arrive. This is such a fun an easy way to make money!

Jewelry (Gold)

Ok, all of us have seen the commercials on TV advertising cash for your gold jewelry. Gold is worth a lot these days, and if you have any gold jewelry, you can cash in on the “Gold Rush” that is taking place right now. Just go to the site, order a kit (it comes to you free) then put your unwanted items in the package and ship it off. You get a check within a few short weeks. Some people are taking it a step further, and having “Gold Parties”. You host a party, you ask your friends to come with their unwanted gold, and they will be given a check that night for their jewelry. The jewelry can be tested for carat content and weighed. Depending on the ounce-cost of gold that day, guests can walk away with hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The party host pays them with cash or a check, then ships the gold to a refinery, where it is melted down and recycled. The refinery then pays the host – at a price higher than paid out to guests, the host hopes. You can get a Host Kit for $699 at www.mygoldparty.com. Or you can simply just go to www.cash4gold.com and order a prepaid envelope to send in your own gold.

Hopefully you have seen something here that can help you bring in a little extra cash to help the money last longer than the month. Happy Summer and best wishes to all your money making endeavors!
