Building a Business: Find Your Niche
October 29, 2010 by: January ThomasStarting your own business is hard work. From marketing to payroll to replacing the printer toner, everything is on your shoulders. But if you choose your business carefully, you can find your perfect niche in the market – and thrive.
The first step is deciding what business to go into. For some, the business just evolves out of a hobby, like say, making strawberry jam or taking family portraits for friends. In those kinds of cases, you already know WHAT you want to do, you just have to decide HOW to do it.
But for others, the decision to start a business comes from the desire to work for ourselves, be in charge of our own destiny, and challenge ourselves. In this case, the exact nature of the business is yet to be decided. So, how do you decide?
You have to find a niche – and by that I mean finding something that’s unique, so that you don’t have as many competitors, but also something that you have at least a little insider knowledge about.
I married into a family that already owned a jewelry business, so when I found some old gold jewelry I wanted to get rid of, my husband’s family helped me sell it for the best price. And that’s when I realized I could help others do the same.
So, I had the insider knowledge (through the jewelry store), I just needed to find a niche. There are tons of infomercials out there asking you to send your jewelry off without knowing anything about the company buying it. So, I thought, why not make the process friendlier? Why not throw parties where people could have fun with friends and make some money at the same time?
And that’s when My Gold Party was born.
To find your niche, explore all your various connections. Friends, relatives, coworkers, neighbors – you never know where your “insider knowledge” will come from.

Gold is the Decade’s Best
December 28, 2009 by: January ThomasHappy holidays wishes to all, with a special season’s greetings to the permanent gold skeptics.
The decade that ends Thursday is on track to be the worst in recorded history for the U.S. stock market – worse than all of the many boom-and-bust cycles of the 19th century, worse than the Great Depression-era 1930s, worse than the recession-plagued 1970s.
The S&P 500 opened the decade at 1,469.25 on January 3, 2000. When the market closed on Christmas Eve, the S&P 500 stood at 1,125.46 – with four trading days left in the decade, the index’s annual performance over that span is negative 2.6 percent. The Dow Jones Industrials has lost about 1 percent per year over the same period, and the Nasdaq Composite is down a whopping 5.9 percent annually. When adjusted for inflation, the 10-year returns for these indices are even lower.

Meanwhile, what about gold?
The chart above from Bloomberg tells the story – a $100 investment in gold when the market opened on January 3, 2000, was worth about $380 as of this week (data through December 21) – that’s a total return of 280 percent and an annualized return of 14.3 percent. Gold stocks (as measured by the XAU Index) have also had a good decade, climbing 9.4 percent annually.
Commodities (as measured by the S&P GSCI Enhanced Total Return Index) posted average gains of 13.6 percent per year over the period, driven mostly by rapid economic growth in Asia and elsewhere in the developing world.
There are many commentators out there who see no value in gold and who denounce it as an investment at every opportunity. They are certainly entitled to their opinions, but it’s hard to argue with the numbers over the past 10 years – investors on average would have been better off with a gold allocation than having no exposure.
We consider gold a legitimate asset class, and for that reason, we consistently suggest that investors consider a maximum 10 percent allocation to gold-related assets – half in bullion or bullion ETFs and the other half in gold equities – and that they rebalance each year to capture the swings.
What the next decade will bring for gold? Who knows. But we do know one thing – those who held gold for the past 10 years will have a happier New Year than those who listened to the perma-skeptics.

My Gold Party, LLC (“My Gold Party”) is now doing business in Canada
December 8, 2009 by: January ThomasMy Gold Party is pleased to announce that it is now doing business in Canada. As of November 2009, individuals can now send their unwanted gold items to My Gold Party in exchange for a quick payment (USD). Once the package is received, My Gold Party tests and weighs each piece. Once the entire package has been evaluated, a quote is then sent via email to the customer. At this point, the customer can choose to accept the quote or have the items returned to them at no additional cost.
Here is what Julie H. from Tennessee had to say about her experience with My Gold Party: “I was hesitant to just send my gold pieces in the mail, concerned that I would not receive a fair value if I was not there to ‘make my case.’ I could not have been more wrong! The entire process was fair, professional, with excellent communication and punctuated by the receipt of a generous payment! Thank you for your professionalism and your responsiveness. As a result, my friends will be sending in their box of goodies! Thanks!”
My Gold Party plans to expand its home party business to Canada in 2010 as well. My Gold Party is a safe and convenient way to get rid of old and cluttered gold. At the gold party, a My Gold Party representative will test and weigh the partygoers gold, and pay them on the spot for their unwanted items. What a perfect night out for your friends and family!
My Gold Party, LLC was founded by January Thomas in the beginning of 2008. What started as one person throwing gold parties has now turned into over 80 representatives throughout the United States and continues to grow. For more information on how to sell gold please click here. To speak with someone at My Gold Party, please call (888) 44-MYGOLD or email us at info@mygoldparty.com

Easy Ways to Score Some Cash
November 12, 2009 by: January ThomasEasy Ways To Score Some Cash
Many work at home careers can benefit from an influx of cash on the side, especially if you’re just getting started. Here are a few wonderful ideas for earning extra cash as a perfect complement to the work at home lifestyle.
Garage Sales or Internet Auctions
Now is the perfect time for selling any items you just never used or no longer have use for. People are spending more money these days at thrift shops and second hand stores than they are at the local retailer. Gather your items together, wash/iron any clothing you wish to sell (especially if you are selling it online and needing pics) Items that are presented in a neat orderly way sell twice as fast! Don’t forget any collectibles or antiques you might have. My parents just this past week made over $600 on EBay selling antiques they have had just sitting around.
Internet auctions do take a downturn for the summer since people tend to spend a lot of time outdoors, or on vacation, away from their computers. Take advantage of the summer season to both sell your items and buy new items you can sell online in fall and winter.
If you opt for a garage sale, one of the best things you can do is invite your neighbors to join you on the same weekend if they can.
Neighborhood garage sales attract a lot of attention (and people too!)
Consignment Shops
As previously noted, people are spending more money at thrift stores and second hand shops these days, so a great place to make a little extra cash is right there. Once again, wash and iron any clothing you plan to take, and don’t get disappointed if one shop can’t take your items. Chances are another shop in town will be glad to take them. You can get ahead of the game by simply making a few phone calls to all the shops in town and finding out what type of clothing they are currently taking. They will also be more than happy to tell you the condition the clothing needs to be in to be considered acceptable. This will cut down on your chances of being turned away.
Cell Phones and Computers
I have had great success with this method of making a little extra money.
There are sites on the net that will pay you for your old broken used cell phones, Ipods and computers. All of us have old cell phones (some of us have five or more!) and many as well have an old computer or laptop lying around. The great thing is, these companies send you the packaging to put your item in, and the postage is PAID, so all you have to do is drop your item in the package, seal it and send it on its way.
Usually within 14 days you have a check in the mail. A good company I have used at least 10 times is www.flipswap.com. They promise to plant a tree for every phone they get. One of my friends makes great money this way. She took a bunch of boxes that once held reams of paper, and put some nice signs on them. She took the boxes to the local daycares and offices in town and asked them to help keep the environment safe by filling the boxes with old cell phones. She convinced them to keep the nice professional looking box out where others would see what it was for. She empties the boxes once a month, and makes about $3000 a month! Just sending in old used cell phones! You can do the same thing. No business is going to turn down saving the planet these days. You could do the same for laptops as well. A good place to check out is www.laptopsintocash.com. These companies dispose of this electronic equipment properly or rebuild it to reuse.
Ink and Toner
This is the same thing as the cell phones/laptops. There are companies out there that recycle the ink and toner cartridges we use by the hundreds. One such company is www.advantagecartridge.com. They pay GOOD money for used ink cartridges and toner. The same thing can be done as the article above suggests. You can go around and leave boxes to be filled with used ink and toner cartridges. Once a month you can go around and empty all the boxes, then simply send in what you have accumulated, and wait for your check to arrive. This is such a fun an easy way to make money!
Jewelry (Gold)
Ok, all of us have seen the commercials on TV advertising cash for your gold jewelry. Gold is worth a lot these days, and if you have any gold jewelry, you can cash in on the “Gold Rush” that is taking place right now. Just go to the site, order a kit (it comes to you free) then put your unwanted items in the package and ship it off. You get a check within a few short weeks. Some people are taking it a step further, and having “Gold Parties”. You host a party, you ask your friends to come with their unwanted gold, and they will be given a check that night for their jewelry. The jewelry can be tested for carat content and weighed. Depending on the ounce-cost of gold that day, guests can walk away with hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The party host pays them with cash or a check, then ships the gold to a refinery, where it is melted down and recycled. The refinery then pays the host – at a price higher than paid out to guests, the host hopes. You can get a Host Kit for $699 at www.mygoldparty.com. Or you can simply just go to www.cash4gold.com and order a prepaid envelope to send in your own gold.
Hopefully you have seen something here that can help you bring in a little extra cash to help the money last longer than the month. Happy Summer and best wishes to all your money making endeavors!

$1,000 or not, gold has been no slouch the last nine years
September 9, 2009 by: January ThomasGold is trying to get the world’s attention again. Its devotees say it shouldn’t have to work this hard.
The metal’s third attempt in 17 months to rise above the $1,000 mark — and stay there — failed last week. But another run seems likely this week.
Near-term gold futures in New York jumped more than $40 an ounce last Wednesday and Thursday, to $995.80, before stalling out on Friday. The contract closed Friday at $994.90, down 90 cents for the day.
Is $1,000 a big deal for gold? It could be, if the metal could top that price and hold above it. At that point, investors who’ve been unsure about adding gold to their portfolios might decide it’s high time to get on board. Large, round numbers can do that to people — and gold’s permabulls naturally would love to be able to talk about $1,000 in the past tense.
Goldchart Crossing that mark for good also would give gold’s fans a chance to remind the gold-free what they’ve been missing: The metal is on track for its ninth straight annual gain, a feat that few other investments have achieved in this decade.
Gold’s winning streak lifted it from $279 at the end of 2001 to just over $1,000 in March 2008, before buyers began to balk. The metal rebounded from last fall’s global asset crash to revisit $1,000 in February, only to quickly run out of steam again.
As the price began to lift off last week — after treading water in recent months — traders were hard-pressed to explain the sudden move, as I noted in this post on Thursday.
Much of gold’s strength since 2001 has derived from the dollar’s ongoing loss of value. The DXY index, which measures the greenback against six other major world currencies, reached a high of 120.90 in mid-2001. It closed Friday at 78.14, down 35% from the 2001 high.
Gold in this decade has resumed its role as the natural alternative to the dollar, and to all paper currencies, as a store of wealth — a way to protect purchasing power.
But in recent months the dollar, like gold, had mostly just been running in place. The DXY index last week slipped just 0.3%, and was no lower than it had been a month earlier.
One theory making the rounds last week was that gold’s sudden strength was foreshadowing another steep drop in the dollar this fall. The greenback would be vulnerable if investors were to lose faith in a U.S. economic recovery.
President Obama’s declining poll numbers also could undermine the buck, if foreign investors were to equate his loss of public support with economic weakness.
The other popular explanation for gold’s fresh appeal is that some investors increasingly are wary of all paper currencies, fearing that the response of central banks worldwide to last year’s financial crash — a massive injection of money into the banking system — will set the scene for an inflation surge.
Even if inflation never flares, the simple argument for gold in a portfolio is that it should continue to play the same useful role of the last nine years: If you think the dollar has nowhere to go but down as the U.S. tries to borrow its way out of this recession, gold should stay on the opposite side of that seesaw.
And as a bonus, if the hard-core gold bugs finally are right about doomsday being just around the corner, you’ll have your gold to trade for that one last can of spinach or tuna, or for that one last shotgun round.

My Gold Party Fundraiser
August 24, 2009 by: January ThomasSI Manhattan Beach held a unique fundraiser in January, raising $650 for the Soroptimist STOP Trafficking campaign. President Kelly met Erin Stevenson of Long Beach at another community fundraiser, and with only two week’s planning held a party for members to sell their old gold.
Kelly invited all club members and friends via email, and opened her home for two hours one evening, serving wine and snacks. Erin, the operator of MyGoldPartyCA, weighed and measured each piece of jewelry, telling the owner its value. Their business is to buy unwanted or broken gold pieces, and send them to a central wholesaler who melts the gold down and resells it.
At evening’s end, Erin donated 15% of all her purchases that night to the club. Erin also provided a “pot of gold” where guests could drop in pieces for a 100% donation. Kelly and Erin have kept in touch, and want to let other clubs know about this recession-proof fundraiser-imagine inviting your guests to something with NO ticket price, some fun looking at jewelry, and your guests go home with money, all while contributing to your club’s fundraising goals.
Erin has appeared on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, and her business has been reported on the Los Angeles KABC News. They are honest and reputable, and have become big fans of the Soroptimist mission!
Contact Erin via her website: www.mygoldpartyca.com, her email: erin@mygoldpartyca.com, or phone (562) 433-9669.
Erin recently reported a party where she bought $13,000 in gold, and said it was a shame that it was not a fundraiser! Can you imagine the opportunity your club might have to raise money safely and simply?

Gold Parties Lucrative in Tough Economic Times
June 9, 2009 by: January ThomasClick here to watch the video!
Oct. 8, 2008 5:30 pm US/Eastern
As is often the case when markets tumble, the price of gold rises.
Right now it’s trading just under $900 an ounce.
Now some people are making cold hard cash by cleaning out their jewelry drawers and having fun at the same time by hosting what’s called a gold party.
“This is not your mama’s tupperware party,” said Amy Barnett, who hosted a gold party for her friends. “The economy is bad right now and this kinda puts a little spin on it.”
Amy’s friends and neighbors brought their old, unwanted jewelry to her home, where among the drinks and hors d’oeuvres, broker Katie Kupferschmid was holding court. “I thought that sounded like a cool idea to do home party where people leave with money rather than spend money, especially now that the market is so bad.”
Kupferschmid determines the karat of the gold, weighs it, and then calculates a price. Miffy Meacham got $462 for several jewelry items.
“It’s great to clean out your drawers and find stuff I haven’t worn in years,” said Mecham, pocketing the cash. Dorothy Peretti got $520 for some pieces she no longer wears because they were given to her by her ex-husband.
All told the women at the party got about $3,000 for their jewelry which Kupferschmid will then sell to a company that melts it down and re-sells it. Barnett gets 10 percent, or about $300 for hosting the party.
Keep in mind that selling your unwanted jewelry at a party will earn you less than you might get selling it directly to a jeweler or gold dealer, since the person who is running the party and the hostess get a cut.

Parties help guests sell their gold – Springwise
by: January ThomasAs the weakening economy causes purse strings to tighten in many parts of the world, consumers are increasingly looking for new ways to earn some extra money. Enter My Gold Party, which facilitates Tupperware-style parties that help guests sell their unused trinkets, cashing in on record gold prices.
Launched earlier this year, My Gold Party sells all the equipment minipreneurs need to host parties in which guests can sell their gold, including a scale, karat tester and book of instructions. Party hosts then invite guests to bring gold coins, watches and jewelry to their party, where they assay and weigh each item to determine its current market worth. The party host pays guests for the items with cash or a cheque, then ships the gold to a refinery, which in turn pays the host—at a rate the host hopes will be higher than paid to the party guests. The gold is then melted down and reused. My Gold Party’s kit for hosts is priced at USD 699.50. (Obviously, scales and karat testers can also be bought from many other suppliers.)
Consumers in hard times have always been able to sell their spare jewelry in pawn shops, but by bringing the process out of the back alley and into the living room, My Gold Party legitimises and updates it with a social and entrepreneurial twist. As the saying goes, there’s gold in them thar hills—both for the consumers who have it and for the minipreneurs who help them sell it. One to bring to cash-strapped hills near you?
