As of November 2009, individuals can now send their unwanted gold items to My Gold Party in exchange for a quick payment (USD). Once the package is received, My Gold Party tests and weighs each piece. Once the entire package has been evaluated, a quote is then sent via email to the customer. At this point, the customer can choose to accept the quote or have the items returned to them at no additional cost.

The host of the party invites family and friends to clear our their jewelry boxes in search of outdated gold, mismatched pieces, broken chains, single earrings, and the like.  They bring the items to the party, where a My Gold Party representative, who is equipped with a scale, magnifying loupe, and gold tester, weighs each piece and purchases the gold on the spot at the current market value.  The host and My Gold Party representative each profit from a percentage of the gold value.

When former preschool teacher and mother of three Sandi Staiti heard that her sister-in-law was hosting a gold party, she was a bit put off that she wasn’t invited – but also intrigued. “I had no idea what gold parties were. I thought they were jewelry swaps,” she confesses. After scoring an explanation and an invite, Sandi corralled some junky jewelry she had lying around the house – broken chains, orphaned earrings and pieces she no longer wears – and headed to the party. She says, “When I was offered $1,300, I almost fell off my chair.”

After her big payday, Sandi immediately looked into hosting her own party. After some research, she chose My Gold Party, the company her sister-in-law used. She booked two gold parties within two weeks, and after scoring big as a host (a cut of 10 percent of the profits), she set her sights on becoming a rep. Good move: Her first party as a rep paid out over $5,000, earning the hostess around $500 and Sandi a bit more.

Now with more than 100 gold parties under her belt, Sandi has the system down. She starts by sending each hostess a customized flyer to be distributed to potential guests. “I love that I’m free to create my own promotional materials and put my marketing degree to use,” she says. The day of the party, Sandi arrives 30 minutes beforehand to set up and explain to the hostess how the party will run. Then Sandi tests each piece of jewelry with a digital gold tester, sorts it by carat, weights it and gives each guest a price. If the price is right, she gives them the cash on the spot (from her personal account). Then she sends the gold to MGP and receives a check within 48 hours. Each party yields different results, says Sandi: “I’ve had some gold parties make $50 and others make over $10,000!”

Gold parties have become a nice source of income for Sandi’s family. Her earnings have allowed them to continue to enjoy the same activities they did in a stronger economy, like traveling and staying involved in multiple sports. And she says she wouldn’t give up her new calling for the world. “I love what I do,” raves Sandi. “I’ve met great people, heard wonderful stories about jewelry and even kept some pieces that I couldn’t resist!”

SI Manhattan Beach held a unique fundraiser in January, raising $650 for the Soroptimist STOP Trafficking campaign. President Kelly met Erin Stevenson of Long Beach at another community fundraiser, and with only two week’s planning held a party for members to sell their old gold.

Kelly invited all club members and friends via email, and opened her home for two hours one evening, serving wine and snacks. Erin, the operator of MyGoldPartyCA, weighed and measured each piece of jewelry, telling the owner its value. Their business is to buy unwanted or broken gold pieces, and send them to a central wholesaler who melts the gold down and resells it.

At evening’s end, Erin donated 15% of all her purchases that night to the club. Erin also provided a “pot of gold” where guests could drop in pieces for a 100% donation. Kelly and Erin have kept in touch, and want to let other clubs know about this recession-proof fundraiser-imagine inviting your guests to something with NO ticket price, some fun looking at jewelry, and your guests go home with money, all while contributing to your club’s fundraising goals.

Erin has appeared on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, and her business has been reported on the Los Angeles KABC News. They are honest and reputable, and have become big fans of the Soroptimist mission!
