Oh no he didn’t! Exes exposed gifting fake gold
September 24, 2010 by: January ThomasImagine bringing a once-treasured piece of jewelry to My Gold Party only to find out it’s fake. Unfortunately, it happens quite often.
I’ve tested many pieces of gold and discovered they were only gold plated, or worse, not gold at all.
I remember one episode in particular. I hosted a party for friends from college and one brought a ring from her ex boyfriend that turned out to be less than authentic. Telling her was awkward indeed, especially since I knew the guy who gave it to her.
If you are in doubt as to whether a piece of gold is real, there are ways to tell.
- Inspect high-friction areas for discoloration. If there are areas where the gold has rubbed off, it is plated.
- Hold it up to a magnet. Gold is not magnetic, so if it sticks, it’s fake.
- Look for stampings. By American standards, fake gold is anything less than 10k.
- Send it to My Gold Party. We’ll do the testing for you. If your piece turns out not to be gold, we can always send it back.
